As you are all probably well aware tragedy struck on January 12th, 2010 when an earthquake measuring 7.0 in magnitude struck the Haitian capitol. The death toll has yet to be fully revealed, but news outlets are estimating that it may be as high as the tens of thousands.
To get an idea of the devastation, you may want to look at the Boston Globe's pictorial coverage of the tragedy (warning*graphic imagery)
In times like these it is important that we come together as a community and reach out to help our fellow humans. A great thing about the Web is that it connects us all. We cannot treat this as an isolated issue. This is not just an issue for Haitians, but for Americans as well. Imagine, in 2010, being unable to contact or find your loved ones or even being able to verify if they are okay. We here on "Semi-Dead" have friends, family members, and loved ones who are being directly affected by this tragedy either by being in Haiti or are still waiting to hear about their loved ones.
Haiti is a beautiful country that has seen centuries of hardship but has still nevertheless managed to have a global impact. Many do not realize that the zombie mythos originates from Haitian voodoo lore so many of us, at the very least, owe a creative debt to this country.
If you would like to help we've compiled a list of charity and outreach organizations that are accepting donations and even volunteers to help with the relief efforts. Every little bit helps and even with a small donation you can do your part and there are many ways that you can contribute:
American Red Cross - You can make a donation or even volunteer to donate blood to help earthquake victims.
UNICEF - take donations specifically to help children affected by the disaster
Doctors without Borders - Because of the tragedy the medical infrastructure in Haiti's capitol is being overwhelmed. The situation is chaotic and right now they may need qualified medical personnel more than anything.
Yele Haiti- An organization run by musician (and Haitian native) Wyclef Jean. Text "Yele" to 501501 and $5 will be charged to your phone bill and given to relief projects through the organization.
MADRE - A women's rights organization also working to bring medical assistance to Haiti.
Action Against Hunger - Prepared to provide food aid as well as help in sanitation efforts.
Mercy Corps - An organization dedicated to community rebuilding in impoverished countries.
Partners in Health - An organization based in Haiti that provides medical and healthcare services.
International Rescue Committee - Helping with rescue efforts.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragedy
